Middle Island Press Poets’ Readings and Award Nominations

It always makes me smile when my poets send me notes on how they’re doing; it’s good to feel their enthusiasm. I’ve received news of two readings within the first quarter of this year:

Georgia poet Stephen Godfrey (formerly from WV) did a reading on January 23rd at Christian Books and More in Moultrie, GA.

New Jersey poet Barbara Wirkus did a reading on March 24th at the Kenilworth (NJ) Public Library.

Furthermore, there was a recent award nomination. Robert Epstein, a haiku poet and anthologist from California, had his first Middle Island Press title (chapbook: What My Niece Said in My Head) chosen for the “shortlist” of the Haiku Foundation Touchstone Book Awards, 2014.

Blessed be the poets who enrich the life of myself and others with their heartfelt words. In the end, “heartfelt” is really what it’s all about.

Windows of the World by Stephen Godfrey

If this publisher/editor may choose favorites among titles, then I must say that of Stephen Godfrey’s SIX Middle Island Press chapbooks, Windows of the World is my personal favorite.

The poems in Windows of the World are a gathering of perennial favorites and newer poems, all complimentary as they vary from the spiritual to the social to the sentimental as Godfrey remembers his mother (to whom this collection is dedicated), yet the common thread throughout is Godfrey’s developed “serious” voice which has earned him the nickname “The Serious Poet.”

Poet Stephen Godfrey: Forthcoming Reading and Book-Signing

Our congratulations to West Virginia poet Stephen Godfrey who had remarkable success with his recent book-signing. He reports that he sold several copies and talked with a lot of great people. This success is to be followed by another reading and book-signing event at the Craft Memorial Library on Federal Street in Bluefield, West Virginia, in conjunction with National Library Month. It is scheduled for April l8th from 5:30 to 6:30, so pen it in and show your support for Appalachian poets!

Middle Island Press is proud to have represented Steve time and time again; he’s quite prolific and inspired, and I am sure that he will have several titles on hand.

MIP Release: Love Casts a Long Shadow by Stephen Godfrey

Love Casts a Long Shadow was the first Middle Island Press chapbook release of 2013, and furthermore, it is Stephen Godfrey’s fifth title that has been published through us! This is the type of rapport that are proud to develop with our clients, some of the finest poets in America and beyond.

Here is a snapshot of Godfrey’s first run just after trimming, pending wrapping and shipping. This title is available through Middle Island Press alongside his other titles – this one being spiritual in nature – read a sample at the MIP website and pick up a copy for yourself and a friend.

MIP Release: Serious Stuff by Stephen Godfrey

Most suitably titled, Stephen Godfrey’s fourth Middle Island Press chapbook addresses in his straightforward style subjects such as social, environmental and spiritual decay while honoring memories and upholding significant people and events in history–”serious stuff” for serious readers and supporters of Appalachian poets. This 43-page collection reflects Godfrey’s signature casual and very readable delivery.

From Page 31: “The Butts”

Dotting the landscape across our land,
On a highway, specks of orange
Fly out of car windows, hitting
The pavement and bursting into cinders.
Non-biodegradable filters make
Their homes in crack and crevice.
It’s against the law to litter,
But tossing cigarettes is a cultural norm.
America, America, where have your
Butts gone?

Pick up a copy of Serious Stuff (make that one of each of his four poetry chapbooks) at the Middle Island Press website. It will also be available through Amazon.com in September.
